A Post a Day and NaNoWriMo

Well, it would seem that my husband has expanded his horizons this year from not only being devoted to college basketball but now also college football. (Imagine me breathing deeply and trying to keep myself from screaming wildly, pulling out all my hair, and driving to the nearest psych ward!)

Deep breath…

In light of this development I have officially decided to commit to two challenges I have given some consideration to over the last year. The first has actually already started and you didn’t even know it! Ha! I’m sneaky like that! It’s the Post a Day Challenge being conducted by WordPress. It started as a year-long challenge back in January, but they have given it a new spin for us late-comers to just do it for the month of October in preparation for NaNoWriMo (more on that in a sec). So basically, you will be hearing something from me every day this month. I make no promises of grandeur or overwhelming inspiration, but I will be making the effort to put some semi-interesting content on this blog here all month long! There, I said! Now I have to do it!

Which brings me to my next challenge, which I actually participated in last year but due to unforeseeable circumstances had to put my involvement on hold… for a year… and that is NaNoWriMo (aka National Novel Writing Month). I began a little book last year called Caked, of which I gave you all a little sneak preview of the prologue a few months ago. Although the rules state that you are supposed to be writing something entirely new, I will be tweeking them ever so slightly. You see, the challenge specifies that you have to write 50,000 words during the month of November, but the average novel has somewhere in the neighborhood of 75,000 words. Since I already have about 20,000 words written (the prologue and first six chapters) I figure this is the perfect opportunity to write the rest of the novel, which will be “technically” entirely new. So there, take that NaNoWriMo- I’m going to win you one way or another!

I sincerely want to get my little baby finished and see if she actually holds any water in the writing world. I can’t tell you what it would mean to me to see my name printed on the cover of a book! Not to mention the financial relief it would help bring my family (but that is really a very minor perk to the possibility of seeing that dream fulfilled!). If I can just buckle down and do it, it could be life changing! One can only hope!

So, barring any major catastrophes in my life or the lives of my family or friends in the next two months, I will be taking on these challenges full boar! Wish me luck- better yet, pray! Pray very hard! :-)

Oh, and I’d LOVE to know if any of you crazies out there will be participating with me! Leave a comment and let me know!

I have the same dream. I still am not sure I have enough life to make a novel yet, but I would really love to. The hard part is keeping going, so I wish you good luck on completion of your novel. I think I might start writing more too, although not book level yet! You have inspired me!
