Freedom in HIS work

I am still making my way through The Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson- I know, I know, I tried to read it with the Good Morning Girls book club this summer and I just had so many other studies and so much going on that it simply didn’t happen. It wasn’t that I gave up it’s just that I have been trucking along a little more slowly.

Well in all that slow contemplation and my own seeking to grow closer and more intimate with my Savior, finding my whole identity and every need fulfilled in Him, something just reached out and struck my heart this morning. It is a verse that it well quoted, I’ve heard it countless times. When Sally mentioned it in the book she was discussing how if we can trust ourselves into God’s hands in this way that we can also trust our children into His hands for the same purpose-

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6 NASB

Let me just say this first- I love how Sally applies this to the raising of our children, along with soooooo many other things she has talked about in this book. (Get it. Read it. It’s amazing.) But time and time again I have been finding truth renewed for ME in the course of reading it. So often I get bogged down by mothering, being a wife, trying to be the person that God wants me to be and so constantly failing, that I become burdened by this life and wearied. I just can’t be that person that I envision in my head… well, not without His Spirit anyway. I get so caught up in trying to make it all happen that I forget that He will be my strength. He will finish this work in me that He started- I just have to trust Him and be willing to follow.

How freeing it is to be reminded of that fact- that I am His, that He cares for me, that He has a plan and He will make sure it is carried out, in both me and my children.
