Project Cultivate- An Introduction

One Mom's journey to go big at home and be real in the process

You can listen to the audio version of this blogpost right here!

Alright ladies, this idea has been stirring around in my head for quite some time, and honestly, I have posts that I truly could have written since the beginning of the year but all the while I have felt like I couldn’t because I hadn’t gotten my introduction out of the way.  A serious, busy mom of four, hang-up!

Confused? Well, if you follow the Cultivating the Lovely Facebook Group then you know what I am referring to.  A few weeks back I asked if anyone would be interested in reading very raw, non-pinteresty posts about my journey to cultivate loveliness in my home this year- the down and dirty, nitty gritty.  We’re talkin’ no perfect pictures, joining in the middle of the mess, and reading my mostly unedited thoughts (let’s be reasonable).  Just good old-fashioned blogging!  Ya know, the journaling style that started long before Pinterest, and masses of affiliate programs, and bloggers getting all techy?  In other words, the good old days.

Well, the resounding answer was, “Yes!” But like I said, I was all hung up over my intro.  I wanted to be able to give you guys a clear direction for what I was trying to do, let you know what to expect, and figure out what exactly I was trying to be accountable to before I just dove in with posts that seemed all random and anti-modern-day-bloggy.

So, here I am, technically on day 19 of my challenge, feeling behind and wishing I would have written sooner (mostly because some of the posts I have written in my head are stinkin’ funny!  Just take my word for it.).  But alas, I am jumping in now, deciding to banish the guilt and declaring that it is perfectly ok to to press start on Day 19.

What in the world is Project Cultivate?

You all know that I lead a morning show on Periscope called Cultivating the Lovely AND I have a podcast called… yup, that’s right, Cultivating the Lovely- The Podcast (we’re real creative over here).  So that’s a lot of talking about loveliness but not always feeling like the lovely is really happening in my life and my home.  It is all amazing in principle, but where does the rubber meet the road?  When do I actually put feet to these platitudes?

Now, ladies, NOW!!

So, in the face of blogging being dead and all that mumbo jumbo, I’m diving into this little project and having faith that there is actual purpose in putting all these words on the screen, even if for nothing more than accountability.

Over the next 11 1/2 months I will be taking you along as I attempt to do the following-

  • Organize my house, like, for real
  • Establish rhythms, routines, habits and rituals in our home and family (including seasonal traditions)
  • Intentionally add more beauty to our space
  • Become more hospitable

The heart of the challenge is to create a more intentional home life that is filled with love along with systems to allow things to run more smoothly and save everyone from frustration and decision fatigue.  If we are finally able to get on top of a lot of areas in our life and establish good habits I believe we will have less stress and frustration, not to mention white space and margin for the fun stuff.  It is going to take a lot of work to get there but, deep down in my toes, I know it will be worth it.

How will it operate?

Ok, here is the “technical” part… the rules if you will.  Since “cultivating” anything takes labor, care and study (as you hear me say pretty much all the time on Periscope), those are the things I will be largely focusing on in my posts.

  • How I am laboring (aka working) to make these things a reality.
  • How I am caring (or decidedly not caring) about each and every one of these things- kind of the inner-life dialogue part of the posts.
  • How I am studying to learn how to do them all better. (This is a year of big reading goals for me, so there will be lots about the books I am daily ingesting, no doubt.  You can find me and my, admittedly, ridiculous to-read list on Good Reads right here.)

Along with these basic guidelines I will be posting pictures of both my kitchen and my couch on the day I write each post.  One of my major goals is having both of these spaces neat and tidy before bed each night since they both tend to become dumping grounds. Nothing is more fierce than pictorial accountability, am I right?(Man, that is scary to type!)

Each post will be numbered according to the day of the challenge that I am currently on.  Oh, and I plan to post at least 1-2 times a week, but if I am feeling particularly witty then it might be more.

How do I follow along?

Well, right here, of course.  But just in case you are a daily subscriber to the blog and are now worried that I will be inundating your inbox with a surplus of posts that you just aren’t entirely interested in, DON’T WORRY!!  All you have to do is change your subscription settings to “Weekly Newsletter” in the email I am sending you today and you will get a basic review on the weekends where you can find the links to each new post and get all caught up if you should so choose. (Phew! Did I ease your fears?)

Here Goes Nothin!

Ok.  It’s as simple as that.  I’m now accountable to the internet!  Please be gracious with me but I do dearly hope you enjoy the ride!

I am looking forward to following you in this journey! We live in a small, two bedroom apartment. Granted it’s only the two of us and our two dogs, it can be hard to keep things lovely! I am also trying to get organized and declutter our little space. Excited to cultivate more loveliness in our home!

So excited!! Hope you’ll incorporate some of your homeschooling in these posts also 🙂

So if we want to get the daily updates just do nothing, correct? Meaning if you’re already getting your emails they will automatically come daily unless we change our subscription preferences?

Correct- if you want them daily then don’t do a thing!

And I will definitely try to add in homeschooling tidbits as they happen if they strike my fancy, which I am sure they will at some point!

Awesome! We could all use this kind of accountability and grace! I’m so happy to have found you and to be along for the ride!

You go girl! You are daring greatly in this journey, and I’m cheering you on. Thank you so much for being real and showing yourself as you are. I know that like me, many women feel identified and encourage with your honesty. I’m looking forward to this new journaling process. You have my prayers… I too feel very much like you said in great need get it together in the same areas of accountability for this project.
    thank you!

Is this happening? Just curious because I can’t see anymore posts on it on the blog. “Good old fashioned blogging” is my favorite. I’m not a big fan of the “10 steps to help with blah blah blah” format that has taken over the blog world. I’d rather see what other moms/wives are doing in their homes than have them toss out advice to the internet. So I hope you’re posting away somewhere and I just haven’t looked in the right spot!

Hi Mackenzie! I am definitely interested in following your journey 🙂 Are the updates on this website somewhere?
